Process For Refinishing Corian Countertops

These are my notes from the how-to videos, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xiVtgcHOtE (Parts I and II), with some modifications. Refer to the videos for more detailed, and original, instructions.

(1) Manually remove scratches with 120 grit sandpaper.

(2) Start w/ P220 (220) and orbital sander,

  • Move sander front to back, overlapping by 50%;
  • Move sander side to side, overlapping by 50%;
  • Use circular, clockwise motion front to back, overlapping by 50%;
  • Use circular, clockwise motion side to side, overlapping by 50%;
Spray surface with water, remove dust with clean, dry rag;
Use a second dry rag to remove remaining dust and water

(3) Repeat process w/ P600 (400)

(4) Buff with Scotch-Brite Gray (for satin finish), round pads w/velcro
  • Mist surface with water;
  • Keep surface wet without using too much water;
  • Move sander front to back, overlapping by 50%;
  • Move sander side to side, overlapping by 50%;
  • Use circular, clockwise motion front to back, overlapping by 50%;
  • Use circular, clockwise motion side to side, overlapping by 50%;

Spray surface with water, remove dust with clean, dry rag;
Use a second dry rag to remove remaining dust and water

(5) Buff again with Scotch-Brite Gray (for satin finish), round pads w/velcro, and Rejuvenate
  • Sprinkle a vey small amount of Perfect Finish on surface of counter (or a couple of drops on buff)
  • Mist surface with water;
  • Spread mix around, add a little water during process, as needed;
  • Move sander front to back, overlapping by 50%;
  • Move sander side to side, overlapping by 50%;
  • Use circular, clockwise motion front to back, overlapping by 50%;
  • Use circular, clockwise motion side to side, overlapping by 50%;
Spray surface with water, remove dust with clean, dry rag;
Use a second dry rag to remove remaining dust and water

(6) Polish using variable speed polisher, buffing pads, and Hope's
  • Start with white buffing pad;
  • Sprinkle a small amount of Hope's on surface of counter (or a couple of drops on buff)
  • Mist surface with water;
  • Spread mix around (with polisher off)
  • Angle polisher to just use part of one side;
  • Add a little water during process, as needed;
  • Move sander front to back, overlapping by 50%;
  • Move sander side to side, overlapping by 50%;
  • Use circular, clockwise motion front to back, overlapping by 50%;
  • Use circular, clockwise motion side to side, overlapping by 50%;
Spray surface with water, remove dust with clean, dry rag;
Use a second dry rag to remove remaining dust and water

(7) Repeat polishing/Hope's process, using yellow pad

(8) Manually polish with beeswax compound, using circular motion to blend in.

Hi Gloss, Lt Color, P220, P600, P800, P1000, Rubbing Compound, Finesse-It (or substitutes)
Semi Gloss, Lt Color, P220, 600, White Scotch-Brite
Satin, Lt Color, P220, Grey Scotch-Brite
Matte, Lt Color, P180, Red Scotch-Brite

Hi Gloss, Dk Color, P220, P600, Perfect Finish with Green Scotch-Brite; Buff w/ Satin Perfect Finish until surface is dry;
Semi Gloss, Dk Color, P220, P600, Perfect Finish with Green Scotch-Brite; Buff w/ Satin Perfect Finish completely wet
Satin Finish, Dk Color, P220, P600, Perfect Finish with Red Scotch-Brite; Buff w/Matte Perfect Finish completely wet
